Join us for a creatively focused weekend by the coast, photographing two of the North West’s most striking locations, Crosby Beach and Liverpool’s Albert Dock area. This workshop is ideal for any women drawn to mood, form and trying new ideas, with time spent exploring long exposure, working in a square format and experimenting with multiple exposures.

Locations

Crosby Beach is home to Another Place by Antony Gormley, a striking installation of 100 iron figures standing quietly out to sea. The shifting tides, changing weather and evolving light continually reshape the scene, creating brilliant opportunities for long-exposure images and creative multiple exposures.

Albert Dock Area

Over at Albert Dock, the historic warehouses, bold modern architectural shapes and reflections provide a completely different but equally inspiring setting. The clean lines and structure lend themselves beautifully to square format shooting, encouraging a more considered approach, while multiple-exposure techniques give you the freedom to introduce movement and a more personal interpretation without losing that strong architectural feel.

Weekend Itinerary

The schedule may change slightly depending on the weather and light conditions.

Day 1 – Saturday 19th September

10:00 am – Meet at Crosby Beach (low tide 07:15, high tide 12:37)

We’ll start the day exploring multiple-exposure techniques using the Gormley figures, looking at ways to include more than one statue within a single frame, experimenting with white balance and making the most of in-camera blend modes to create more expressive results.

As the tide begins to recede, we’ll move into long exposure work. Slowing the shutter speed changes the feel of the scene completely, softening the movement of the sea and sky while the statues remain still. We’ll explore how to balance movement and stillness to create simple, atmospheric images with a calm, thoughtful feel.

You’ll learn how to use a tripod and neutral density (ND) filters to allow you to create soft, flowing movement in the sea through slower shutter speeds.

Day 2 – Sunday 20th September

10:00 Albert Dock – Shooting Square and Capturing Structure

Sunday takes place around Liverpool’s Albert Dock, where the focus shifts to working in a square format. You’ll compose your images in-camera rather than cropping later, which encourages a more considered approach to framing, balance and visual flow.

We’ll build on your multiple exposure skills, this time with an emphasis on keeping the strong structure of the dock intact, while adding a creative layer. Techniques include intentional camera movement, such as crosshatching and 180-degree rotations to introduce variation while maintaining a clear sense of form.

We’ll finish the workshop at around 3:00pm.
