Canon has announced a new lens is joining its hybrid prime line-up with the launch of the Canon RF 20mm F1.4L VCM. Designed with both video and stills shooters in mind, this full-frame lens offers an ultra-wide 20mm focal length and a bright f/1.4 aperture to suit everything from capturing expansive landscapes to creating atmospheric establishing shots for video.

The large maximum aperture is especially useful in low light and enables attractive background blur, while the advanced optical construction is claimed to ensure sharp results from edge to edge. Canon has used a combination of Aspherical, Super UD, UD and BR elements in the lens to minimise distortions and colour fringing, while the 11-blade circular aperture helps deliver smooth, cinematic bokeh.

Despite the short focal length, the RF 20mm F1.4L VCM has the same size, controls and handling of Canon’s other F1.4 hybrid primes. That’s good news for anyone who wants to switch lenses without needing to rebalance a gimbal or adjust settings during a shoot.

The lens features Canon’s Voice Coil Motor (VCM) for fast, near-silent autofocus with minimal focus breathing – ideal when shooting video. There’s also an Iris Ring for seamless, clickless aperture adjustments in 1/32 steps, giving users precise exposure control when filming. A dedicated Lens Control ring and customisable button further enhance the operation.

Weighing just 519g and measuring under 10cm in length, the Canon RF 20mm F1.4L VCM is compact for such a fast, wide lens. Like other L-series optics, it has robust weather sealing, and it offers both a 67mm front filter thread and a rear gel filter holder for added versatility.

With a minimum focusing distance of just 0.2m and a 94° diagonal angle of view, this lens opens up dynamic framing possibilities for both photo and video work, giving scope to capture subjects in context.
