Nikon has announced the second generation of its professional-level 70-200mm f/2.8 for the Z mount, and on paper at least, it looks like a thoughtful update rather than a minor refresh. The Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II was revealed on 24 February 2026 and is aimed at photographers and video shooters who rely on this focal range day in, day out.
The headline change is the weight. At 998g, excluding the tripod collar, this new version is 362g lighter than the previous model and 12mm shorter. If you regularly shoot weddings, events, sport or wildlife, you will know how much difference a few hundred grams can make over the course of a long day. It should also feel better balanced on smaller Z bodies.
The internal zoom design means the lens does not extend as you zoom, so the centre of gravity stays consistent. That’s useful for handheld shooting, and even more so if you are filming on a gimbal and do not want to keep rebalancing your setup.
Nikon is quoting up to 6 stops of in-lens Vibration Reduction, with Synchro VR available on compatible Z cameras, including the Z9, Z8, Z6III, Z5II, Zf and ZR. Paired with the constant f/2.8 aperture, this should give a bit more confidence in low light and when working at the longer end of the zoom.
The autofocus system has also had a significant update. The new Silky Swift voice coil motors promise much faster focusing when used with an EXPEED 7 camera body, along with noticeably quieter operation. Nikon says the AF speed can be up to 3.5 times faster than the first-generation lens, with improved focus tracking while zooming. That will be one of the key areas to watch for anyone photographing moving subjects.
Optically, the lens has been redesigned with a streamlined formula that uses dual-sided aspherical elements, Super ED and SR glass, plus Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings. The aim is improved sharpness, controlled flare and ghosting and smoother bokeh. The 11-blade rounded aperture should also help produce a more natural separation between subject and background.
Close focusing is better too, with a minimum focus distance of 0.38m at 70mm and 0.8m at 200mm. That makes it a little more flexible for detail shots without reaching for another lens.
Handling refinements include a removable tripod collar with a screw type Arca Swiss compatible foot, a protective collar and a de-clickable control ring for silent adjustments during video. Plus, the supplied HB 119 lens hood has a filter window, so you can adjust rotating filters without removing the hood.
There’s also weather sealing to help protect against dust and moisture, though as always, it is not a guarantee in every condition.

The Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II is due to go on sale in March 2026. The recommended retail price is £2,999 in the UK and €3,499 in the Republic of Ireland.
