Canon Launches Two Ultra-Wide RF Lenses for Creative Shooters

Canon has introduced two professional-grade ultra-wide lenses for its RF mount, offering photographers and videographers new creative tools in the shape of the RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM and the RF 14mm F1.4L VCM. These L-series lenses are built for full-frame EOS R System cameras, offering high-end image quality for those who want to push the boundaries of wide-angle photography.

The Canon RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM is the world’s first fisheye zoom lens to offer a 190° field of view at 7mm. On full-frame cameras, it delivers both a circular 7mm and a diagonal 14mm fisheye look. For APS-C shooters, it provides a diagonal 180° view at around 8.7mm, making it a flexible option for creative work – although you’ll have to look out for your feet in the frame!

With a fast aperture and compact build, this lens is aimed at photographers working in a range of genres, including action, astro, travel and experimental portraiture. It focuses as close as 0.15m, exaggerating distortion for more pronounced impact. The optical design includes aspherical and UD elements for sharpness, plus Canon’s ASC coatings to help reduce flare.

Canon has also included a drop-in filter system with the ability to adjust an optional circular polariser or variable ND filter.

Thanks to its STM motor and suppression of focus breathing, this lens should be just as capable for video, including circular fisheye video that can be transformed into immersive 2D 180° VR using Canon’s EOS VR Utility.

The new Canon RF 14mm F1.4L VCM is a rectilinear ultra-wide prime lens with an expansive 114° angle of view and a large maximum aperture. This makes it suitable for landscapes, interiors, astrophotography and video work, especially in low-light situations or when a shallow depth of field is required.

Despite the large aperture and wide coverage, Canon has kept the weight down to around 578g, which makes it a practical option for handheld and on-the-go shooting. The VCM autofocus motor, iris ring, and hybrid features give the lens strong video credentials too.

The optical quality promises to be great with Fluorite, BR, GMo aspherical and UD elements to ensure clarity across the frame and excellent control of chromatic aberrations. Canon’s coatings also minimise flare and ghosting, while the 11-blade diaphragm supports attractive bokeh and starburst effects.
