Sony has announced the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS, its longest-ever E-mount zoom lens, aimed squarely at wildlife, bird and sports photographers who need extreme reach without sacrificing portability or robbing a bank.

With a 35mm full-frame format, this super-telephoto zoom extends Sony’s already comprehensive lens range, which stood at 77 E-mount lenses before this latest release. The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is designed for those who demand flexibility, pairing an impressive focal length with a comparatively lightweight 2,475g build (including the tripod mount). There’s also an internal zoom mechanism to maintain a steady centre of gravity when shooting handheld or on a gimbal.

The lens is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, extending the reach up to 1,120mm and 1,600mm, albeit at smaller maximum apertures of F11 and F16, respectively. Sony has equipped the lens with a linear autofocus motor, ensuring fast, precise focusing that keeps up with the 120fps burst shooting capabilities of the Alpha 9 III. For filmmakers, the lens supports 4K 120p and 1080p 240fps slow-motion recording, with optical and in-body breathing compensation to minimise distracting shifts in angle of view.

Optically, the lens comprises 27 elements in 19 groups, including six ED elements to control chromatic aberrations and produce crisp, high-contrast images. An 11-blade circular aperture is said to ensure smooth bokeh, while a multi-coating minimises flare and ghosting. The minimum focusing distance is 1.7m at the wide end and 3.5m at 800mm, with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.23x, making it possible to capture fine detail in smaller subjects.

Handling-wise, Sony has built-in three focus hold buttons, a focus range limiter switch (10m–near, 8m–infinity, or full), and a full-time DMF switch for manual focus override. The tripod foot is fixed rather than detachable, prioritising strength and stability when mounted. With three image stabilisation modes, including a mode designed to aid composition, Sony aims to make long-lens shooting smoother and more intuitive.

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is sealed against dust and moisture, with a fluorine-coated front element to repel water and oil. A bayonet-style lens hood with a filter window allows easy adjustment of circular polarisers or ND filters without removing the hood.
