Canon EOS C80 Price, Specs, Availability Announced

Canon has announced the EOS C80, a new RF-mount cinema camera that builds on the EOS C70, one of the company's most successful EOS cinema cameras, and the EOS R5 C to blend the latest technology with a compact, ergonomic design.

Aimed at professional filmmakers, the Canon EOS C80 is the second Canon cinema camera to have a full-frame backside-illuminated (BSI) stacked CMOS sensor, the first being the C400. In fact, the two cameras share the same sensor, so the C80 has a total pixel count of 26.67MP. Consequently, the C80 is capable of full-frame 6K video capture with 16 stops of dynamic range.

The Canon EOS C80 blends aspects of the EOS C70 with those of the Canon EOS R5 C.

The Canon C80 supports 12-bit Cinema RAW Light recording at up to 6K 30p (the C400 is capable of 6K 60p), plus new MP4 video formats such as XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S, and oversampled 4K 4:2:2 10-bit video for enhanced image quality.

While 6K recording is capped at 30p, 4K video can be recorded at up to 120p and 2K at up to 180p, giving lots of scope for high-quality slow-motion movie creation.

Like the C400, the new Canon C80 has triple base ISO of 800 / 3200 / 12,800 (depending on the gamma mode). This comes with an intelligent auto-switching mode to swap between the base ISO values as the lighting changes.

Canon has also given the EOS C80 its Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology with face, head, eye and body tracking for humans, plus animal tracking (for dogs and cats).

The detachable top-handle makes the C80 comfortable to hold for 'run-and-gun' recording.

While the Canon EOS C80 has many features in common with the popular C70, its ergonomics have been refined to make it better for handheld use and when paired with gimbals or drones. There’s also a removable top handle that has been been redesigned to make it more comfortable to use, and the new multi-function shoe is compatible with a wider range of accessories.

In addition, the vari-angle 3.5-inch 2.76-million-dot LCD screen is brighter than the C70’s, making it easier to see outdoors or in bright light. The joystick is also easier to reach with your thumb.

Naturally, the EOS C80 has Wi-Fi and ethernet connectivity for file transfer, remote camera control and IP streaming. The camera is also compatible with Canon’s RF 5.2mm F2.8L Dual Fisheye lens and offers creative control for VFX and virtual production.
