Sigma 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN Art price, availability, specs announced

Sigma has announced the 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN | Art, the first full-frame zoom lens to offer a constant maximum aperture of F1.8.

Sigma’s Art lenses are the company’s highest-quality optics, and the new 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN | Art is claimed to deliver prime lens-like sharpness and clarity.

Maintaining a constant maximum aperture throughout the zoom range means there’s no need to adjust the exposure settings when changing focal length with the 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN | Art lens. The large aperture enables comparatively fast shutter speeds in low light and attractive blur.

Thanks to the internal zoom and focus design, the 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN A remains the same length regardless of the focal length or focus distance. This adds to the lens's stability when shooting handheld or using a tripod or gimbal.

Further good news is that the lens is weather-sealed against dust and moisture ingress.

The Sigma 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN Art lens is shown here on the full-frame Sigma fp camera.

With a minimum focusing distance of 30cm across the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4 at the 45mm end, the 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN A is suitable for close-up photography.

The lens weighs less than 1 kg and is constructed from 18 elements arranged in 15 groups (5 SLD and 3 aspherical elements). In addition, Sigma’s Nano Porous Coating and Super Multi-Layer Coating, reduce flare and ghosting, even in backlit conditions. Meanwhile, the front element has a water—and oil-repellent coating.

According to Sigma, the lens is carefully corrected for optical aberrations throughout the zoom range to ensure it competes with prime lenses for clarity and definition. Focus breathing is also said to be suppressed, which means the angle of view remains constant as focus distance changes.

The new lens features a High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) for fast and precise autofocus, which is also nearly silent, making it suitable for video recording. Meanwhile, a bi-wire driven focus ring is claimed to offer smooth manual focusing, with adjustable torque and rotation angle, providing fine control for both filmmakers and photographers.

Customisable Controls

The Sigma 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN Art has an aperture ring with a click switch and lock, along with two AFL buttons for customisable settings, to enable photographers and videographers to set up the lens to suit their shooting requirements.

The Sigma 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN Art lens is the same length at the 45mm point as it is at the 28mm end.
